The large San Giovanni building commands an ample view of the valley below. Perhaps for this reason it seems to have been the first fortification on the site.
The original construction appears to have been three Longobard towers, erected around 700 AD, and in Berardenga times the building was probably a barracks.
Eventually the middle tower collapsed partially, while the once defensive castle continued life as a peaceful agricultural center.
A small window framed by “pietra serena” (a grey sand stone typical of Tuscan historic architecture, extracted from quarries at Fiesole, Arezzo, Cortona and Volterra) is still visible on the outside of the wall facing the valley, though it has long been walled over on the inside. You may be able to see it looking back from the castle walls.
